NIIF announces a first close on NIIF Infrastructure Fund II, registered with SEBI on 30 June 2026
Has NIIF Infrastructure Fund II reached a first close?
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited announced on 31 August 2026 that NIIF Infrastructure Fund II had reached a first close, anchored by the Government of India. SEBI's register lists NIIF Infrastructure Fund II as an active Category II Alternative Investment Fund, registration number IN/AIF2/26-27/2231, valid from 30 June 2026. The announcement is a company press release, not a SEBI filing.
What was announced
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited, which describes itself as India's sovereign-anchored alternative asset manager, said on 31 August 2026 that NIIF Infrastructure Fund II had reached a first close. The statement is a press release, issued from Mumbai and published on the manager's own website.
The release says the close is anchored by the Government of India. It names AustralianSuper, CPP Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and Temasek among the global institutional investors, and ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Life Insurance and HDFC Life Insurance among the Indian ones. It describes the fund's sectors as energy, transport and digital infrastructure, extending to urban infrastructure and electric mobility.
Sanjiv Aggarwal is quoted as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIIF, and Vinod Giri as Managing Partner, Infrastructure. The release also carries statements about what the strategy is intended to achieve, which this page does not reproduce as fact.
What SEBI's register shows
SEBI's register of Alternative Investment Funds carries an entry for NIIF
Infrastructure Fund II, registration number
IN/AIF2/26-27/2231. The AIF2 element marks it a
Category II AIF. The entry records the registration
as valid from 30 June 2026, with no end date, which is
perpetual validity; status active; contact person
Nilufer Shekhawat.
The register lists funds. It does not list their schemes, and the release does not name a scheme.
Two similar names, two registrations
The register carries a separate and older entry named National Investment and Infrastructure Fund II, registration IN/AIF2/17-18/0526, Category II, valid from 19 March 2018. It is a different registration from the one announced here. The register also carries National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (IN/AIF2/15-16/0194, valid from 28 December 2015), NIIF Fund of Funds - I, NIIF India Yield Fund, India Japan Fund and NIIF Private Markets Fund II.
The release refers to "NIIF's first infrastructure fund" without giving a registration number, so which of these registered funds it means is not established by anything public.
The date that checks out
One claim can be tested against a public record: the fund's own registration. SEBI's register gives 30 June 2026 as the date NIIF Infrastructure Fund II's registration is valid from. The release is dated 31 August 2026. That interval is two months and one day.
What is not public
The release states an amount for the close and a target size for the fund. This page does not carry either figure, and the reason is not caution about this manager. No amount committed to an individual AIF appears on any public SEBI record. SEBI's register records that a fund is registered and in which category. It does not record what a fund has raised, what it has drawn down, what it charges or what it has done with the money. Those figures sit in a private placement memorandum, which is not a public document — which is also why no AIF's results can be compared with another's from public sources. See why AIF performance is not public and capital commitment.
A first close is a milestone the manager defines and chooses to announce. It is not a regulatory event, it triggers no SEBI filing that reaches the public register, and nothing about it is independently verifiable here beyond the registration itself.
